Poultry Keeper Profile.

Sorry....

Please note are Poultry Keeper Profiles are currently offline until further notice.

We are currently reviewing them and planning to improve them.

Where you can learn all about different poultry keepers, their hobbies and what inspires them.

Each month we choose a different poultry keeper at random and ask them some questions, display some photos of there birds and one of them if they choose to inclue one, details of how to contact them and an advert of their choice for the bottom of the profile.

Once we have displayed their profile for a month if they give their permission we will move it to the forum and provide a link from this page so you can go back and view it at other periods. You will find previous poultry keeper profiles on the second box down on the right hand side. If they don't give their permission we will not be able to display it after it has been on the main site.

This is designed to be a useful and interesting feature enabling you to know about other people interested in the same hobbies as you, learn about other poultry keepers, what they do, different breeds they keep and so on so this will inspire you and you can learn from them as we believe this is one of the best ways.

Q: When did you first become interested in poultry?

A: "I was raised on a farm.  Moved to the city when I was 11.  Wanted to get back to a farm setting ever since.  Finally was able to purchase a farm of our own in June of 2001. "

Q: What got you interested in poultry?

A: "I guess my Mom did.  We would go out and feed the chickens together when I was a little girl.  Now the members of Feathered Friends keep me wanting more and more of the different breeds."

Q: How many birds do you have at the moment?

A: "136"

Q: What breeds do you currently have?

A: "Oh boy…ok, besides the mixed breeds…Barred Rock, White Rock, Araucana, White Leghorn, Black Sexlink, Golden Sexlink, Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire Red, Austrolope, Salmon Faverolle, Buff Orphingtons, Golden Laced Wyandottes, and Silver Laced Wyandottes."

Q: Do you have any current or long-term breeding programs running at the moment? If so what are they? How are they going so far?

A: "No, none yet.  But I have a mixed batch of Polands, Blue Cochins, Sultans, Silkies, and Mille Fluer d’Uccles in an incubator at the local school and hoping for breeding trios of those breeds."

Q: What are your plans for the future with different breeds?

A: "Most of my chickens will be able to join the main laying coop.  Breeding trios will be kept separately to sell hatching eggs to local people and over the internet on ebay."

Q: Do you reckon you will always keep poultry?

A: "As long as I live and can, yes."

Q: What are your favourite breeds?

A: "Probably Cochins.  I just like the round, feathered fluffiness of the breed and the docile manner."

Q: What tips do you have for anyone who wants to start out keeping poultry or is looking into it?

A: "Read as much as you can.  Whether that be on the forums or in books.  This forum has a good reference area, along with Feathered Friends.  Understand that chickens are not a casual ‘pet’.  They take daily care to keep them happy and healthy.  What ever number you decide on getting, plan on that changing…they are VERY addictive!  I only wanted 10…maybe 12 tops.  LOL!"

Q: Anything you recommend people interested should do? Any items they should buy?

A: "Keep a stocked medicine cabinet at all times.  There are lists on the different forums of what items are important to have.  Once a chicken shows signs that they are ill…it is long into the process.  Immediate treatment is necessary."
